Subliminal Messages: Fact of Fiction

Hello all! Sorry for the lateness of this blog. I didn’t realize I had to post on Friday. Mea culpa. That being said, I wanted to talk about subliminal messages this week. Do you believe in them? Do you think it’s a bunch of hogwash? Are we unknowingly influenced by the media (advertisements, movies, etc.) that surrounds us everyday?

To a certain extent, I think that we are subliminally influence by advertisements, but I think some people look way to far into the idea. Like this website (http://www.subliminal-messaging.com/visual-examples-of-subliminal-messages/), for instance, finds sex written in everything. I highly doubt Disney meant to put a “penis representation” on their Little Mermaid movie cover or that Pepsi meant to spell “sex” on their Pepsi can. It all seems like a bit of a stretch. According to this website (http://subliminalmanipulation.blogspot.com/ ), “Since almost all people have a strong affinity to sex, a sexual subliminal message would be the most effective one. Embedded on a certain product it's supposed to trigger viewers attention, emotions and stir up affinity in him toward the product.”

I find it difficult to believe that there are advertisers and graphic designers out there placing these messages into ads. But what do you think? Are subliminal messages real? Do they work? Are we all brainwashed?
