Are Designers Over-designing?

Does anyone remember taking Max's Typography class and the book cover assignment? We were required to pick an author and three books by that author in order to recreate the book covers as a series. (Using type only, that was the hard part.) A lot of the book covers in the class became more simplified and relevant to the theme of the book. Here's what mine looked like:
