Re: Portfolios and Plans

What kind of designer do you want to be, or what do you want to do with this degree? Print, web, user-experience, book, magazine, all of the above? Why?
My original plan was to go into web design, but I also really like print design. Ideally I'd be able to do both print and digital, which would keep my portfolio diverse.

What kind of workplace do you want, ideally? Freelance, small shop, big agency? Why? How will you search for jobs?
I recently attended a masterclass led by Kit Hinrichs, who had a very pertinent piece of advice: don't go into freelance right after you graduate. Instead spend your first 5 or so years working in an agency or firm or similar, which will give you the chance to learn from experienced industry professionals. I'm not sure I'd want to freelance anyway; at this point I'd rather work for a small shop/studio, (1) because I prefer a more casual environment than a big agency would offer and (2) because small creative businesses appeal to me more than large corporate ones.

For those of who that have portfolios right now, did you build you own site or use a template like Behance? Or pinterest? Can anyone share links to great portfolios (yours or someone else's?)
I currently have an account with Behance, but it hasn't been updated in ages (for instance, it still thinks I live in Frederick). I was hoping to join Dribbble, but it seems you need an invitation to be able to post and I don't know anyone on there. :( But here's some fabulous portfolios at least:
