I came into this program simply wanting to be a graphic designer with the hopes of freelancing once I graduate. After 4 semesters in the program I'm not completely sure what I want to do. I ultimately would like to run my own firm, but I see that starting under another company is the best way to go. I would love to start with a small company of other designers rather than a place where I'm the sole designer. I want to absorb as much information as possible. Since this is my second career, I'm hoping that it won't take more than 5 years for me to feel comfortable enough to get out on my own.
I'm leaning towards magazine design with attention to web design. I actually struggle with magazine design, but love this the most so far through this program. There seems to be an influx of small magazines coming out lately and I feel there is a need, in this area at least, for quality design.
As for my portfolio, it's been tough to present. I was so excited to post everything when I first started, but now i'm very apprehensive. I'm on Behance, but it has all of my beginner designs. I'm working on a website, but again I'm not loving what I have to show, so I don't promote it much, if at all. I have it, because I need to show something. I'm also a makeup artist, so I've been working on how to incorporate both. One of the portfolios I like actually comes from a student I met at MICA who is also both a designer and makeup artist. I plan to find more portfolios that combine the two (you'd be surprised how many GD/Makeup Artist are around) So I guess its important to look at what you want to do specifically and review those types of portfolios.
Sorry if this sounds all over the place. I'm helping my daughter with new math, and I'm struggling to understand how they teach this stuff!
Oh, and having the chance to look through some of your portfolios…Thanks for the shout out Juanita!…Sharmia, you have been a great source so far for freelancing.
