Coming from Community College I had a portfolio and when I sat down with a teacher at UB, I was told I didn't have a focus. Most of my work showed that I knew how to use the adobe suite but kind of stopped there. When I took portfolio as an undergrad, I was told I didn't have a focus again. It was frustrating because this was work I had done throughout the past couple of years at UB. So yeah, I can understand the struggle of putting together a portfolio. I am also taking the class next semester and do not really feel confident that I have enough to make a substantial portfolio. I think my issue is that it is work I have completed for school and not for a client; my purpose being to fulfill an assignment. In my mind, this makes me feel that it will not be viewed as professional enough.
1. What kind of designer do you want to be, or what do you want to do with this degree? Print, web, user-experience, book, magazine, all of the above? Why?
I am having a crisis and have no idea what I want to do. I used to want to be a web designer, I kind of want to be a travel blogger/photographer that test out hiking/backpacking equipment. I kind of want to teach adobe products as a freelancer.
2. What kind of workplace do you want, ideally? Freelance, small shop, big agency? Why? How will you search for jobs?
Everything above makes it seem like I want to work for myself, except I don't know if I want to. I feel pretty intimidated about graduating. Maybe I will just be a forever student.
I have started two portfolio websites and trashed both-- mainly because I keep learning new web design stuff and feel I can do a better job. Plus, I keep revamping my portfolio but I imagine I might eventually just use a CMS for easier maintenance.
