Great topic Katie! I honestly haven’t put too much thought behind my own design philosophy. So I’m glad you brought this up.
I design because I’m a problem solver. I’m fascinated by the challenge of communicating an idea visually. Anyone can make something look pretty but not everyone can make people think. When I self critique, the first question I ask myself is why? Why did I make these design decisions? I shouldn’t pick a typeface because it’s pretty. I should use it because it helps solve the overall design problem. I should be able to explain every element. Does that happen all the time? Nope :) but I’m definitely working on it. Of course aesthetics creep in but thats natural. My tagline is “beauty + function.” I aim to create beautiful designs that have a purpose. A website can be fully functional but also an eyesore––and a brochure design can be gorgeous but the information is unreadable. I want my designs to make sense… and look great!
