1. What kind of designer do you want to be, or what do you want to do
with this degree? Print, web, user-experience, book, magazine, all of
the above? Why?
My background is in fine art with a
concentration in graphic illustration. I choose to enroll into the MFA program because I wanted more learning and understanding on being a great designer. I've had several graphic computing classes in undergrad but never gain the amount of knowledge that I have gained thus far at UB.
I would like to combined my fine art background with my current designer's track to become a well rounded Graphic Designer. Often the two hats clash and sometimes it is very challenging for me to put on hat down to focus on the other. I still would like to use my fine art background to teach art one day either at the secondary level or college level. I am currently working on perfecting my web design skills and hope to have a better understanding and expertise within the next year
2. What kind of workplace do you want, ideally? Freelance, small shop, big agency? Why? How will you search for jobs?
A small shop or big agency are ideal workplaces for me. I've always dreamed of working for major magazines like Vogue and Ebony or working for Nike and Adidas. I love being a designer, I love photography and I love art. These companies have every umbrella that I am currently perfecting.
I am currently working on my online portfolio. I used a wix.com template and will be adding some of my own coding to it. I love the content management set up it has and it is very easy for someone starting an online portfolio for the first time. Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS would be very useful for beginners. Eventually I will graduate to a WordPress site.
