Portfolios and Plans

On Monday night I attended an event titled "Intro to D.C. Design". It was an event meant to introduce emerging designers to the design community in Washington, D.C.  It featured a panel discussion with freelancers, in-house designers, and a graphic-turned-software designer who is starting his own business to compete with Adobe. It was co-sponsored by AIGA, and every student, freelancer and self-proclaimed Photoshop whiz in the DC metro was there. During the Q and A, and the discussion, several versions of the same question was asked: "What should I include in my portfolio?"

The answers ranged by panelist from showing process, to being well-rounded, to demonstrating good typography. But one panelist struck a cord with me when she said firmly, "Your portfolio is a communication problem. You have a story to tell." This got me thinking. What kind of designer I want to be? What kind of portfolio do I want to have?

Since I am planing to enter portfolio next semester, and many of us are far along in the Pub Design program, I'd like to discuss our future plans. I'm curious where you all plan to go and hope we can share some observations, dreams, fears, and job boards :)

1. What kind of designer do you want to be, or what do you want to do with this degree? Print, web, user-experience, book, magazine, all of the above? Why?

2. What kind of workplace do you want, ideally? Freelance, small shop, big agency? Why? How will you search for jobs?

3. For those of who that have portfolios right now, did you build you own site or use a template like Behance? Or pinterest? Can anyone share links to great portfolios (yours or someone else's?)
