At some point or another we all have to get out of our comfort zone,
otherwise we would never learn new things. But learning new things is one of my
favorite things about being a designer. I definitely get having an idea, but
not being able to execute it.
Sometimes I notice that the more the work does not feel like my own, the
more likely it is to be unfinished, which is a bad thing. Obviously the
unfamiliar is shaky territory, but I guess a good way to think about it is that
you aren’t repeating yourself. So if you
haven’t tried illustrating before, now is a good time to start. Obviously, it
won’t be something you have done before, so that is unique to your portfolio
and it is always good to master all your materials. It’s okay to look at other
images for inspiration rather than trying to freehand every little thing from
memory.
I am always doubting my design ability and I get creative blocks all the
time. I am pretty sure I spent the entire last semester in a funk. I wasn’t
satisfied with any of my work. My final idea hardly ever resembles my original
and when I try to force that first idea, I tend to really dislike the ending
result. My problem last semester was that my vision was ahead of my execution,
rather than me working out the problem as I went (kind of why I hate mood
boards). I have trouble letting go of a certain idea sometime—really a lot of
ideas most of the time.
