RE: The Future of Publication Design

The transition from print to web is happening with a lot of businesses, and eventually everything will be web based.  I think the reason why some magazines and newspapers are still printing, is because some of their audience is old fashion and rather read the actual print piece.  There's a magazine called Complex that I collect because of it's fun, artistic covers that are illustrated by artist such as KAWS.  As the months go by I have noticed that the uniqueness of the cover has died down, and it looks like the company decided to go with a more simplistic approach of just a photograph.  The most recent issue, I noticed that the paper of the cover was different and cheap looking.  The reason for this could be two things.  The company can't afford to have a different artist illustrate their cover each issue, or they are slowly converting over to web.  Either way, I'm a dedicated reader and like others, I would prefer to read and experience the actual magazine.

The transition of books front print to digital formats is also growing rapidly. This morning WYPR announced that our Secretary of Education is pushing for school books to be converted to digital formats. Apparently South Korean students are almost entirely reading digital text on devices like nooks. Soon, no South Korean students will read a paper school book.
