Good question, Kim! Persuasion is a fascinating topic. It seems like what many of these ads have in common is simplicity, high
contrast, and an element of surprise.
In the comments section of the “40 social issues” article
that Jasmine posted, some people raise the concern that some of the ads are
just blatant appeal to emotions with little logic (the gun one, in particular).
It seems designers have to balance logic, political correctness (or lack there of) and facts with the desire to attract attention and persuade.
I immediately thought of
this NYC government campaign surrounding teen pregnancy and the controversy it
caused. These ads did more than persuade – they caused anger, praise, and a discussion about teen pregnancy in the media.
