Re: The Power of Persuasion

Awesome post!

Are there any signs or campaigns that you really appreciate or find effective?
A campaign that I really found effective was "Who Weighs the Aussie Average?"

The ad asks the questions "Who Weighs the Aussie Average?" and features six women of varying ages and heights. When one flips the page, they learn that each woman weighs the same (70kg or 154lbs.) I found it interesting because it goes to show just how differently different woman carry the same weight (which is, unfortunately, a big deal in our society. Any that have worked on you? The above ad worked on me because as a female in today's society, weight is always an ever-present issue that we all face; some people feel they are "too thin" or "too fat" and find themselves comparing themselves to others. This ad made a mark on me because I find myself comparing my weight to others and it made me realize that weight is just a number on a scale.

What other factors make a campaign so effective?
The tone of the campaign definitely makes it effective--as Tiffany noted in her post, both the infamous Sarah McLauchlan BC SPCA ad and the Wake County SPCA are both in favor of animals. Yet while the Sarah McLauchlan ad uses melancholy music and images of abused animals, the Wake County ad uses upbeat singing and happy animals. Many find the Sarah McLauchlan ineffective (like myself) as it evokes feelings of not only sadness, but helplessness. Therefore, the tone of the ad causes the message to be lost (depending on the person).

How do you make a boring or difficult task easier to digest and initiate in a campaign?
Viewing things with fresh eyes and/or a fresh outlook definitely help to make a boring or difficult task easier to digest. Many times people become overwhelmed with the task at hand and therefore are unable to think outside of the box. By stepping away, clearing your mind and returning at a later time, you recharge not only your brain, but your thoughts as well.

In thinking of a pull and an audience for Project 1, what strategies have you tried?
I have tried narrowing down what works for other clients that are in the same business as my own. By seeing what worked and didn't work for them, I was able to come up with my own strategies and ideas.

As you develop Project 1, where do you pull inspiration for persuasive work?
As my Project is based around animals, I plan to pull my inspiration from images and video of animals happily enjoying products similar to the one I plan to sell. The plan will be to focus on the happy, as everyone loves a happy animal.
