Hey Guys! Sorry I’m late. I may be repeating some things that were already mentioned.
1. What are your suggestions for making this particular branding issue work better?
If you don’t want to change both logos completely, I would experiment with color. I think that would help the logos work together a bit more. I would choose color that compliment both companies––but at the same time making them distinguishable from one another.
2. How important is having a good understanding of brand strategy for people in our line of work?
It’s important for designers to have some knowledge of brand strategy. We should know that the components that we are designing are apart of a bigger picture. They should add or help define a brand. When working on a job it’s important to familiarize yourself with the company’s brand standard. It’s their identity. It’s our jobs to make decisions that are consistent and relevant to the brand that they have.
3. Do you have real life experience with a branding nightmare/success story?
I worked for a large financial corporation for a bit and it was tough. They had really strict brand standards. Everything that was designed had to be checked with a fine tooth comb. Several people had to look at the work going out before it was approved. But that’s how their clients recognized them––so they didn’t take many risks. They had set standards and they stuck to each one of them.
4. How much of branding is good design and good business?
I think it’s equal parts. As designer, you can better serve your client by designing solutions that are consistent to their established brand.
