and now, it's time to play..... NAME THAT FILM MOVEMENT!

Stephanie and Tracy made class so fun on Thursday, I thought it might be cool to continue on the design-game tip. This game will be about identifying film movements or genres based upon poster design conventions and aesthetics (not as dry as it sounds, I promise).

Background:

After having worked in a music/movie store for 7 years, I have noticed that certain genres of both music and film adhere to fairly strict aesthetic codes. This, I think, is out of a need to convey recognizeability and a sense of belonging. You often know immediately that you're holding a metal CD (epic fantastical/horrific illustration and "lightning" writing that's utterly illegible) or a horror DVD (dismembered limbs / creepy long-haired girl in a white Victorian shift, and many Photoshopped layers of various "distress" effects) in your hands based purely on the imagery and graphic style of the artwork. Of course, whenever someone decides to color outside the lines (and does it well), it can be a design paradigm-shifting event.

The Game:

1. Everyone chose and post 5-7 posters that exemplify a cinematic movement or genre (the more specific, the better). Ideally, your posters should have some identifiable stylistic common threads.

2. Your posters will have film titles (which will undoubtedly make this an easy game), but don't include any commentary on your own selections in the posts you author!

3. Comment on other people's posts! Here you can make guesses about genres and identify stylistic commonalities. The comment sections are where the design discussion will take place. Talk about what you like or don't like, what's works and what doesn't, ask questions, etc. Don't be afraid to get deep with it! (P.S. try to resist consulting with Professor Google before you make guesses.)

4. Tell us about your selections in class! Here's where you get to talk about what you chose and why! Fun!!!!!

5. Winners get cookies and (maybe) pie!
    (HINT: You're all winners!!!)

Let's Begin:

Hi, Beth. This is a fun game and I love prizes! I am not equipped with genre names--could you give us multiple choice? Your poster styles are clearly related and look familiar, but I can't identify a name and am not sure what you are looking for--are they art deco? One of them reminds me a bit like Saul Bass' style, but I am not sure of the term and don't want to cheat with google.

I guesssss Russian Avante Garde. Don't laugh if I chose a made up one. This is hard! And hard to find movie posters!! Love it though, get people involved :)

These posters are fantastic! Were they all from the same designer? Very similar in theme. I'm guessing Russian Noir because some of them seem like they could be crime story posters. Great game! Thank god you went to multiple choice. I would have never been able to guess otherwise.
