This is a tough one for me. I've always wanted a design and communications mentor, but have never found one and its part of the reason why I love being in a design program so much. Real feedback from people who do the same thing I do is completely new to me, ha ha. I don't really have designer friends outside of school and I am the only designer/PR person at work, so I do a lot of trial-by-error, workshop attending, and "let me google to see what others have done" type learning. It's actually something I have whined about- not having a mentor. I'm looking forward to seeing what others say so I can check some virtual mentors out more deeply.
In terms of the life-coach, inspirational mentor side of things (outside the industry) like Don's Elliott guy, I can recommend checking out Bren'e Brown. I love her Ted Talks (this is her popular one on vulnerability), and its a lot about letting go, being vulnerable and going after what makes you happy and balancing life. I have never read her books, but its on my list. My manager, Rhonda, is also a rockstar. She is only four years older than me (35) and she runs our department like a boss. She took her job when they had completely gutted my department (we were both hired at the same time). She rebuilt our entire organization's marketing and proposal-writing structure at the age of 30 (an uphill battle that continues) and she functions much like Don's Kerry-boss-mentor and Shannon's Tracy. I think having people that encourage you outside your specific profession are just as important as those that inspire us within the creative world.
Moustaches!
Laura -- I like #4! I think I am liking the sketch-y mustaches better....but maybe the name on top?
