Thanks for sharing this magazine Chris. I was looking at it online and it seems really helpful. I always flip through Computer Arts magazine when I'm at B&N. I've bought an issue here and there but since it comes from England it makes my wallet sad. They do a have a ton of tutorials online however, these are all the ones tagged as photoshop tutorials people may find helpful.
I think it's best to do an occasional tutorial to get a better understanding of a technique and to stay in practice. Plus lessons from one tutorial transfer to other effects. But yeah, it can be difficult to remember exactly which issue of a magazine had what article but that's why google is everybody's best friend.
Another valuable photoshop tool are actions presets. There are a million out there that can help anyone add a vintage or horror look to a photograph. Of course it's way more fun to create your own but seeing what others have done is a good place to start.
Oh and before I forget a couple of links to add to Jaime's Saul Bass post. A fantastic montage of his work over the years and album covers he's done. A new big book is coming out that's sitting in my wish list.
