Thanks, Bob and Meg for some really great posts about inspiration. I actually was just have a conversation about this with some creative types from a variety of backgrounds, musician, designers, and writer, and we were talking about the tricky balance between inspiration and emulation. A hypothetical example would be, a musician who is currently recording who doesn't want to listen to that new Radiohead record because they are afraid they will hear something that will influence them (even if it is just on a subconscious level) causing them to knock off a particular sound or style.

We didn't come to any conclusions, but for me, I try to look at a lot of different kinds of designs fairly regularly and appreciate the concepts rather than seeking out one particular style. I don't know. Is that a concern for anyone else out there?

I believe that when we are young our minds are open to anything and everything is new for us, just give a little girl or boy a blank piece of paper and some crayons and they will do anything good or bad, they don't care, but as we age, we begin to form ruts in our way of thinking. We begin to accept that things need to be a certain way, and for whatever reason and after certain level of adulthood, we accept things as they are and forget about the possibility that things don’t have to be how they are or look.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the creativity ends and emulation or inspirational design copy starts when we go to look for ideas that have been tested and approved, ideas that are safe. Just think how many times are we afraid to push boundaries after we reach an idea that comes from us? I do, and I believe so many of us do too. We look online to see if that idea it already exists or if we can improve viewing someone else's ideas, because is safe.
I read an article at NYTimes.com called "Exploring the past: Creativity in Old Age” good article class, and the article shows the idea of how often the decline in creativity comes because people’s underlying capabilities are not being challenged. For me the reason why so many designers, artist or any adult begin to feel as they aren’t as creative as other people is because they live a routine that is repetitive or boring.
I know from experience that in my work without knowing I show or reflect my life, the design or art work will be boring if I'm living in a regular routine or it will be really fun and creative if I break with the routine and do something that is different from my regular routine and challenges my creativity. If you read the article you will get the idea.
Sometimes I can get lost in translation!
