Tweaking Away

I spent most of the Thanksgiving holiday working on Project Two and I think it is finally coming together. My pepper spread has come full circle, from peppers to major peppers and back again. I have also worked and re-worked my second spread, which is about dinning out in Manhattan's West Village. Let me know what you think and if there is any way to improve it. Thanks!

Meg, these look fabulous! How can I be craving curry and chili peppers at 9:30 in the morning...?

Will send more detailed feedback a little later. Great job.

Much improved, Meg. The page is very light, clean and fun. It has the "I want to read this" quality that you want.

I have a couple observations:

1. headline text. you use the same slab-serif typeface for the 2 headlines on the spread, one is lowercase, the other upper case. I suggest going one way or the other, or choose a second font.

2. Illustrations. The vector peppers look good, except the third one down in the left column, it is very flat and does not match the others. Maybe if it had that little white glare that the others have?

3. Grid. I was looking closely at your grid, I am a stickler for grid systems and I think if your page uses them, they have to be perfect. You have not set up a baseline grid system, so the text in each column has a different baseline. This takes some time to set up, you need to take the height measurement of the page inside the margins in points, figure out how many baselines you can fit at say 10 pt and you find your leading. The leading usually isn't something easy like 12 pt, it usually is like 11.784 or something like that. I use a grid calculator I bought online for 30 bucks, the thing is worth every penny. Get the free demo and use it for this project, you'll be glad you did. https://www.designersbookshop.com/grid-calculator-buy.html

Spread #2

1. the headline is floating a bit & the left margin isn't being held. I think you need to do some custom type setting for "table for two." The tracking is off in "for" and the leading is a little too large.

Maybe a secondary color could be incorporated into the article's type? I feel like all black copy is ordinary, and you pick nice colors, maybe use more.

2. Have you tried moving the headline and copy up? it seems very close to the bottom. Your baseline grid works here.

3. You use the | element 3 times in three different ways. Pick one and find another solution.

4. The copy, if you made the text box a little larger and the first column didn't continue with the last 2 ingredients(?) in column 2, I think there will be a little nicer flow.

I'm a big fan of the bold imagery you use in your work, I also like your use of white space and great color palettes. Use some color in your typography, I think you will be happy that you did.
